Yes, you'll have less privacy but the bright side is, it's a great opportunity to meet people and make friends. If you're on a romantic getaway or a family travel, a hostel may not be the best for you. Some hostels offer private rooms. In most hostels, you'll be sharing the bathroom and the kitchen with other occupants. Almost all hostels in America separate their accommodations for males from the females.

Hostels are not very common in the US because of the burgeoning motel industry. If you are tight on budget, a motel can be the best option for you. Motels can be as inexpensive as hostels but more private and easier to find.
